Although those fibers are typically harvested from wood waste, new research shows that they could also be obtained from mega-plentiful used coffee grounds<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cellulose is the most abundant organic compound on Earth. Among other places, it&#8217;s found in the cell walls of plants \u2013 it&#8217;s what allows plant leaves and stems to be as strong as they are<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"na-recirculation\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Coffee grounds also aren&#8217;t exactly in short supply, with the International Coffee Organization estimating that over 6 million tons (5.4 million tonnes) are produced worldwide annually. Some of them are composted, while others may someday be put to use in substances such as\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/coffee-carbon-capture-methane\/39299\/?itm_source=newatlas&amp;itm_medium=article-body\">carbon capture materials<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/coffee-grounds-biofuel\/49473\/?itm_source=newatlas&amp;itm_medium=article-body\">biofuels<\/a>, or\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/coffee-grounds-road-material\/43328\/?itm_source=newatlas&amp;itm_medium=article-body\">road materials<\/a>. That said, for now at least, most coffee grounds still end up being dumped in landfills<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Led by Assoc. Prof. Izuru Kawamura, scientists at Yokohama National University decided to see if the waste product could instead be used as a source of cellulose nanofibers. Coffee grounds certainly showed promise, as approximately half of their weight and volume is made up of cellulose<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"native_article_mid_desktop_2\" data-google-query-id=\"CIji55XviO0CFRISGwodBdoKtA\">\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The researchers utilized a previously-developed process known as catalytic oxidation, in which a catalyst was used to oxidize the ground beans&#8217; cell walls. When the resulting cellulose nanofibers were analyzed, they were found to have a desirable uniform structure. They also integrated well with polyvinyl alcohol, which is a polymer used in the production of biodegradable plastics \u2013 and the scientists already have an idea for what one of the first coffee-plastic products might be<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8220;Now, more and more restaurants and cafes have been banned from using <strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">single-use straws<\/span><\/strong>,&#8221; says Kawamura. &#8220;Following that movement, we aim to make a transparent disposal coffee cup and straw with an additive comprising cellulose nanofibers from spent coffee grounds.&#8221; A paper on the research was recently published in the journal\u00a0<i><a class=\"Link\" style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10570-020-03113-w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cellulose<\/a><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"desktop_article_1\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-google-query-id=\"CL-Vza3viO0CFQZbGwodVbIH0g\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ref: <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/environment\/coffee-grounds-biodegradable-plastic\/\">www.newatlas.com<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News- We&#8217;ve been hearing more and more about eco-friendly biodegradable plastics, made from cellulose nanofibers.
