{"id":7713,"date":"2022-04-16T07:37:24","date_gmt":"2022-04-16T07:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/behzistdanesh.com\/?p=7713"},"modified":"2022-04-16T07:37:24","modified_gmt":"2022-04-16T07:37:24","slug":"7713upcycling-of-polystyrene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/behzistdanesh.com\/en\/7713upcycling-of-polystyrene\/","title":{"rendered":"Upcycling of Polystyrene waste\u00a0into a Chemical"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Do you know polystyrene can be upcycled<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Stache, assistant professor of chemistry and chemical biology at Cornell University, has discovered a new path for <strong>polystyrene waste<\/strong> that includes being upcycled into <strong>benzoic acid<\/strong>, a chemical with wide commercial demand, through a mild process that uses <strong>light<\/strong>, an <strong>oxygen-rich environment,<\/strong> and an abundant iron-based catalyst<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Polystyrene (PS) plastics vary widely in form, use, and texture \u2013 from light, airy Styrofoam to hard CD cases, and many forms in between. All these products are similar in chemical composition, Stache said<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">To test the tolerance of the process to other materials mixed with the PS plastic, the researchers used several products, ranging from <strong>packaging<\/strong> <strong>materials<\/strong> to coffee cup lids<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">They found that three items \u2013 a white coffee cup lid, <strong>Styrofoam<\/strong>, and a clear lid \u2013 <strong>degraded<\/strong> efficiently. A black coffee cup lid degraded less efficiently, possibly because the black dyes inhibit light penetration, Stache said<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThese results signify that our system could efficiently break down commercial samples of PS, even with additional composite and insoluble material\u201d, she said<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ref:<a
