The impact of burning garbage and plastic on the health of babies and children

Do you know

Burning garbage and plastic is a major contributor to PM2.5 pollution (particulate matter smaller than 2.5 micrometers) and is linked to a significant proportion of lung cancer cases.

In Aspropyrgos, Greece, a 2015 fire at a plastic recycling plant released large amounts of toxic PCDDs and PCDFs into the air. Subsequent community studies showed a 13 percent increased risk of cancer over the next 30 years and an even higher lifetime risk of cancer in infants exposed to these substances in utero or through breast milk.
