Production of Plant-Based Nylon-6

News- Nowadays, the size of the nylon industry market is over 22 billion dollars. This polymer is used in the production of clothes, automotives and carpets. Two companies, Geno and Aquafil, have jointly started the pre-commercial production of block caprolactam as a raw material for the production of nylon 6, and are currently investigating the possibility of making yarn for the textile and carpet industries, as well as engineering plastics from this polymer. These materials will be used by leading global companies in the field of renewable product development

Plant-based nylon 6 is the third major production line of Geneva on the way to commercialization. The company has signed agreements with a wide range of brands to accelerate the global commercialization of sustainable materials, with the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 100 million tons in the coming years. Recent milestones advancing the sustainable materials transition include: a collaboration with lululemon (Vancouver, Canada) to bring plant-based materials into lululemon’s products, a production milestone with partner Covestro (Leverkusen, Germany) for plant-based HMD used in sustainable coatings, and a partnership with Asahi Kasei (Tokyo, Japan) and a newly formed venture with Unilever (London, United Kingdom) to commercialize and scale plant-based alternatives to feedstocks like palm oil or fossil fuels, to make key ingredients used in everyday cleaning and personal care products
